Spirulina explained

Click here to buy our organic spirulina (200g = 490 THB)

The following information is a synopsis of information we found on the net.

Spirulina explained: a natural “algae” (cyanobacteria) with high levels of protein and antioxidants, vitamin B and much more. When harvested from clean water, it can be called one of the best nutrient source.

Mainly protein and essential amino acids, it is a recommended supplement for vegetarians as it contains a lot of natural iron.

Because of the concentrated proteins and iron, it is good during pregnancy, also for after a surgery, or when the immune system needs it.

Benefits

Nutrient Dense

Gram for gram, it is a great source of:

  • Vitamin B1: Thiamin, necessary for digestion of proteins and fats, often used to increase energy, good for your eyes, brains, and nerves.
  • Proteins: A complete source of high-quality protein, almost like eggs on amounts of proteins per gram. The protein is highly usable and a net protein rate of 50-61%
  • Calcium 26x more than in milk.
  • Iron: the best plant to be used if you need additional iron.

One tablespoon contains:

20 calories, 4 grams protein, 11% RDA B1 (Thiamin), 15% RDA B2 (Riboflavin), 4% RDA B3 (Niacin), 21% RDA Copper, 11% RDA Iron

But also:  B-6 (pyridoxine), B-9 (folic acid), vitamins C, D, A and E. Minerals: potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium,  manganese, phosphorus,  selenium, sodium and zinc.

GLA and Omega 3

The amino acids include the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), great for its anti-inflammatory properties when consumed with other quality Omega-3 supplements.

Spirulina is only one of a few food products containing GLA and it contains Omega 3-, 6 and 9s ( high in Omega-3s).

Could help balance blood sugar

It helps in balancing blood sugar, possibly effective medication for diabetes

Strong Antioxidants

These are powerful substances needed to protect damaged cells.

What makes spirulina unique is an antioxidant called phycocyanin.

Removes Heavy Metals

It can bind with heavy metals and help to remove them. (Chlorella does a better job at this)

Chlorophyll

This helps to remove toxins and help the immune system. One study found 5 grams daily combined with zinc supplements reduced arsenic toxicity.

Sport benefits

It improves fat burning during exercise. The antioxidants are beneficial to reduce oxidation due to the sport helping to fight muscle fatigue and an inability for muscles to gain.

Studies found: improved endurance and decreased muscle damage from sporting

How Consume

Make sure that it is organic, (Nonorganic may be contaminated and/or have nitrate compounds).

Simply mix it into water and drink, or add it to a fruit juice, yogurt.

Downside

As I mentioned above, gram for gram one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. It is also probably one of the most expensive when compared gram for gram with protein sources like meat and dairy.

Too expensive as when only used as a source of protein and when compared to dairy or meat.

Warning

Those with Phenylketonuria (PKU) should consult a doctor, as it does contain that amino acid. Users of anti-coagulation medicine should consult a doctor. If you have an autoimmune disease do not use it. Also when pregnant, nursing or have any medical condition, check with your doctor first as should not be recommended for pregnant or nursing women.
